The Industrial Revolution of the 18^th and 19^th century ushered in the beginning of the end of the extended family and the family unit as such. Families moved into the cities to get work in the factories only to work long hours in them.

With modernization and new inventions down through the ages, it has only made it worse

The Telephone (land and mobile), the T.V., Car, the computer and the internet, all have contributed to the breakdown of western society, we have become isolated and insulated loosing our sense of what community is all about.
